Presented is a very unusual assemblage of eighty-one very high quality vintage baseball supplements spanning the years 1899 to 1948. The collection is highlighted by Joe Jackson, and many Hall of Famers, including the earliest-known appearance that could reasonably be described as a card issue of Christy Mathewson. This is a fascinating collection from nine different large-format issues, plus a circa 1914 real-photo postcard of Judy Johnson. 1) 1899 M101-1 Sporting News Supplements:
Nov. 11, 1899 Elmer Flick (two tack holes at the top, otherwise Vg). 2) 1901 M128 Police Gazette Supplements:
Christy Mathewson. Dated August 10, 1901, at the top, this issue represents the earliest appearance of Mathewson on a baseball-related item. The bottom of the supplement reads Famous Ex-Collegian whose Pitching Skill has Excited Baseball Enthusiasts.
Heavy wear and stains along the borders but the image area is fairly clean and attractive. 3) 1909-1913 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements (2 items):
Mar. 31, 1910, Evans/O'Loughlin/Klem/Johnston (Pr) and Nov. 23, 1911, Grover Alexander (Pr). 4) 1909 Boston Herald Supplements:
July 18, 1909, Harry Hooper (Pr). 5) 1926 M101-7 Sporting News Supplements:
Nov. 11, 1926, Harry Manush (Pr). 6) 1928-1932 La Presse Baseball Rotos:
June 6, 1931, Jocko Conlon (mounted to a scrapbook page, but otherwise Ex condition). 7) 1931 Washington Senators Picture Pack:
Joe Cronin (Ex). 8) 1946-1949 W603 Sports Exchange All-Star Picture File Partial Set (42/113):
This collection of large premiums (7 x 10 inches) is comprised of 42 of the 113 in the set. The forty-two premiums in this collection represent five complete series (of the twelve issued). The collection consists of the following: Series 1B including Greenberg and Williams (Vg); Series 2 including Musial (Ex); Series 7 including Joe DiMaggio (Pr); Series 9 including Warren Spahn (Pr); Series 11 including Dizzy Dean and Joe Jackson (Vg). The condition is Vg-Ex overall. 9) 1948 Cleveland Indians Picture Pack with original envelope (31 of 33):
Missing just Lopez and Municipal Stadium for completion.
Ex-Mt overall. Features thirty-one different players including what is essentially Bob Lemon's true rookie card, as well as including other stars such as Paige, Greenberg, and Feller. 10) Circa 1914 Judy Johnson photo postcard:
We have been told by our consignor
that this image is that of a very young Judy Johnson, and while we are in agreement with this identification, because there is no identification printed in the design of the card and it is such an early image, we cannot guarantee the identification. An unusual and substantial representation of quality samples from classic card issues from the 1909 to 1914 era comprised exclusively of Hall of Famers. A fascinating and naturally very difficult to value collection. Total 82 items. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,763
