Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Indianapolis Brewing is an exceedingly rare back for any M101-4, let alone for key card Joe Jackson! This card is a "1 of 1" graded with no other examples at any level graded by PSA. It is the first and only example of this extremely rare M101-4 variety of #87 Joe Jackson that we have ever seen. The 1916 Indianapolis Brewing Co. set is identical in design to M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News (as is the case with all the M101-4 and M101-5 sets issued by various local establishments), but with advertising on the reverse for the "Indianapolis Brewing Co. – Indianapolis, Indiana." To put the rarity of this particular advertising back in perspective, in the entire history of PSA, they have graded a total of only eleven M101-4/5 examples with Indianapolis Brewing Company advertising backs. (Note: The only other Jackson example ever graded by any grading company is a PR 10 example graded by SGC.) This is a great card with any back, but the advertising reverse in this case certainly does deserve prominent mention and potentially adds a very special dimension of interest as an unusual and extreme Joe Jackson rarity. This card, of course, is a classic with any advertising back. Despite playing for thirteen years before his banishment, Joe Jackson appears in very few card sets. He missed being included in the T206 series, and was banished from baseball in 1920, just before the release of the American Caramel and related issues of 1921. This card features Jackson in a classic batting-pose photograph by Charles Conlon, which is the same photograph used to produce his Cracker Jack card. This is an outstanding and extremely attractive example in all respects. No creases. The front and back are both perfectly clean. The image is bright and crisp, with a very slight natural tilt to the image. The corners have just a hint of wear. We think many would grade this card Excellent. At the very least it is close, and a very strong card for the assigned grade. The reverse advertisement for Indianapolis Brewing Company is bold and crisp and centered towards the top right. The back is perfectly clean, with a single very tiny indentation. This is a very attractive example of an extreme rarity and would be a worthy addition to any world-class Joe Jackson or rare vintage baseball-card collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++.
