Collection of fifty B18 blankets, a very crisp and clean group, including many highlights and scarcities, all ranging in grade from Vg-Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex), highlighted by Joe Jackson . These 5.25-inch squares of “flannel baseball cards” were issued in 1914, with several popular brands of tobacco. They are referred to as “blankets” because they were intended to be sewn together to create bed covers, pillowcases, etc. Often overlooked by collectors, B18s are beginning to be recognized both for their scarcity, and for the exceptional value they represent compared to many other 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. Collection of fifty B18s: (color refers to pennants, infield, or basepaths, per The Standard Catalog checklist): Ainsmith (green), Baker (white), Bassler (purple, extremely faded), Bauman (white), two Boone (blue and green), Cole (blue), Connolly (white), Coveleski (white), Cutshaw (green), Daubert (green), Dolan (yellow), two Doyle (brown and green), Fletcher (green), Griffith (white with green), Joe Jackson (purple) with just a hint of fading to the purple of two bases otherwise strong EX, two James (white and brown), Kavanaugh (Kavanagh), Kelley (purple), Leibold (purple), Maisel (green), Mann (white), Maranville (HOF, white), McAllister (purple), McBride (green), Meyers (green), Milan (brown), Miller (purple), Morgan (brown), Mowrey (purple), Murray (green), Peckinpaugh (green), Perdue (white), Rucker (green), Shanks (white), Smith (blue), two Snodgrass (brown and green), Stengel (HOF, green), Tesreau (green), Tyler (white), Wagner (green), Wallace (HOF, purple), J. Walsh (blue and green), Wheat (HOF, blue), Williams (purple), and Wiltse (green). An impressive group including legendary Joe Jackson, four Hall of Famers, and several particularly scarce purple basepath blankets. Total 50 blankets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
