Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Extremely rare tobacco card of Johnny Evers (Boston team variation) from the 1914 Kotton Tobacco set. The Kotton Tobacco set shares designs with several other closely related caramel and bakery issues (E90-1 American Caramel Company, E92 Dockman & Sons, etc.) from the same era. All Kotton Tobacco cards are extremely rare, but an example of Hall of Famer Johnny Evers is especially desirable to serious collectors. This is a particularly fascinating card in the set as, although Evers is listed with the Boston Nationals on the bottom of the card, he is actually pictured wearing his Chicago Cubs uniform from the previous year (1913). Evers was traded from the Chicago Cubs to the Boston Braves for Bill Sweeney plus cash on February 11, 1914. Produced by the People's Tobacco Co. of New Orleans, the Kotton Tobacco series was regionally issued only in the Louisiana area. The offered sample card of Hall of Famer Johnny Evers (one of two poses of Evers in the set) has a flawless image set against a striking red background, with light, even corner wear (more so on the upper left and right), no creases visible on the front, and very well centered. The reverse is clean with a bold advertisement for Kotton Cigarettes (centered to the far right). A tiny surface wrinkle above the advertisement and some minor ruffling along the right edge, both on the reverse, are largely responsible for the downgrade by SGC. This is an extremely strong and noteworthy Hall of Famer example from this rare set. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,645
