Original-owner collection of 185 low-grade cards from twenty-eight different classic nineteenth-century baseball, non-baseball, and nonsport tobacco issues, highlighted by twenty-nine N172 Old Judge baseball cards (including Hall of Famers Hugh Duffy and Tommy McCarthy) and a very sharp-looking N332 S. F. Hess boxing card. These thirty highlight cards represent the vast majority of the value of this collection, though the additional 155 cards, of course, do represent substantial additional value. Each card in this collection has been removed from a scrapbook and has heavy back damage; otherwise they range from Poor to Vg-Ex condition (averaging Gd-Vg overall). 1) N172 Old Judge (29 cards): Bastian (Chicago), Brown (New York; 1888 copyright), Burns (Chicago), Carney (Wash., hands head high; 1889 copyright), Carney (Wash., bat at 45 degree; 1889 copyright), Conway (Boston), Dalrymple (Pittsburgh), Darling (Chicago), Duffy (HOF; throw hand head high), Johnston (Boston; 1888 copyright), Marr (Columbus), McCarthy (HOF, St. Louis, trimmed along the bottom), McClellan (Bklyn.), McGeachy (Indianapolis), McQuaid (Denver;1889 copyright), Mullane (Cincinnati NL), Nash (Boston), O'Brien (Bklyn.), O'Neil (St. Louis; 1889 copyright), Orr (Bklyn.; 1888 copyright), Pfeffer (Chicago), Seery (Indianapolis), Sweeney (Wash.; 1889 copyright), Toole (Bklyn.), Tucker (Baltimore), Van Haltren (Chicago; 1888 copyright), Whitacre (Phila.; 1888 copyright), Williamson (Chicago; 1888 copyright), and Wolf (Louisville). 2) N162 Goodwin Champions (11 cards): Brouthers (HOF; baseball; poor, numerous areas of surface flaking), Hanlan (oarsman), Kilrain (pugilist), Muldoon (wrestlers), Murphy (jockey), Page (high jumper), Rowell (pedestrian), Sexton (billiards), Stevens (bicyclist), Teemer (oarsman), and Vignaux (billiards). 3) N28 Allen & Ginter Champions (4 cards): Barry (hammer throw), Kelly (HOF; baseball; this "card" is actually hand-cut from an album, front only), Ross (oarsman), and Sullivan (pugilist). 4) N332 S. F. Hess Boxer (1 card): Bill Dacy. Perfectly clean on front and some paper remnants and paper loss from scrapbook removal on the reverse. Outstanding contrast! The collection also includes 140 nonsport tobacco cards in very Poor condition, many are glued together, others have been separated and have heavy back damage. Fascinating and very unusual original-owner collection of nineteenth-century tobacco cards, mostly in low grade but still with many highlights, and including thirty-one baseball subjects, many scarce nonsport cards, and one significant boxing-card rarity. Total 185 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
