Presented is a very attractive example of Christy Mathewson from the 1914 Cracker Jack #144 series. Encapsulated as "Authentic" (as opposed to being numerically graded) by PSA due to a very slight trim along the left border, this card was purchased as an Ex-Mt card in an ungraded state by our consignor many years ago. This is a beautiful card. The trim is essentially undetectable (except to a trained eye). The 1914 Cracker Jack #144 is one of the rarest and most desirable of all Mathewson cards and one of the most important of all Cracker Jacks. Christy Mathewson appears in a horizontal pitching pose in the 1914 Cracker Jack set, as opposed to the more familiar portrait pose of the 1915 set. Because there is no 1915 Cracker Jack alternative to the 1914 Cracker Jack Mathewson pitching pose, this card is of particularly great significance to Cracker Jack and Hall of Fame card collectors. It is universally recognized as one of the rarest and most important Cracker Jack cards, and is recognized as the key signature card of the entire 1914 Cracker Jack set. This is an exceptionally attractive example of one of the most classic and sought-after of all Christy Mathewson cards, with beautiful bold colors, no creases, four square corners, and just the lightest hint of caramel staining. (Serious staining can often be a problem with 1914 Cracker Jacks because the 1914 cards were only distributed in boxes of Cracker Jack, as opposed to cards from the 1915 "factory sets.") If not for the slight trim this card would have easily graded Vg-Ex or better. This is an extremely attractive card, providing a relatively affordable alternative to a far more expensive high-grade example of one of vintage-card collecting's most sought-after classics. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,994
