Five of the eight Christy Mathewson cards from the classic 1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folder series, each graded and encapsulated EX 5 by PSA. The cards are identified according to the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. 1) #44 "Devlin Gets His Man" Mathewson/Devlin (Giants). Only six examples graded higher by PSA. The card displays perfect registration, four square corners, and is centered just a hint to the right; this is a particularly sharp looking example that has a strong Ex-Mt appearance. 2) #45 "Devlin Gets His Man" Mathewson/Devlin (Rustlers). Only eight examples graded higher by PSA. Bright and crisp, with light, even wear to the corners, bold colors, and centered towards the bottom right. 3) #46 "Devlin Gets His Man" Mathewson/Fletcher. Only nine examples graded higher by PSA. Striking colors, even wear to the corners, and centered towards the top right. 4) #82 "Just Before the Battle" Mathewson/Fletcher. Crisp, clean, and very attractive, with four sharp corners, flawless registration, and an extremely light vertical surface production crease along the fold of the Mathewson panel (as made, characteristic of T202 set). 5) #85 "Just Before the Battle" Mathewson/Meyers. Very well centered, with four sharp corners, bright and crisp colors, and flawless registration. The card appears Nr/Mt but has been downgraded due to evidence of a crease visible only on the reverse in the upper left corner. All five cards have clean backs. This is an extremely attractive collection of classic Christy Mathewson tobacco cards, representing five of the eight Mathewson cards in the T202 set, all in very desirable grades. The T202 Mathewson (all varieties) is one of the great classics of the era, and one that in our opinion happens to represent a particularly outstanding collecting value compared to other tobacco cards and perhaps any other 1910-era set featuring Mathewson. The SMR value for the five cards is $3,400. Total 5 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
