Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Presented is a stunning high-grade N690 Kalamazoo Bats cabinet card featuring two players: Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson and catcher Fred Mann. This is the only Kalamazoo Bats cabinet-card example of Robinson and Mann we have ever seen. The card featuring Robinson and Mann is also one of the few double-player cards, and the only one featuring a Hall of Famer, in the standard N690 Kalamazoo Bats series. Kalamazoo Bats cabinet cards are among the rarest of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues and feature perhaps the most stunning photography of any nineteenth-century set. The cabinet cards are extremely striking and are much rarer than the traditionally seen smaller Kalamazoo Bats cards featuring Philadelphia players. Kalamazoo Bats cabinets are easily identified by their larger size (4.25 x 6.5 inches) and by the small “C. Gross & Co; Copyright 1887” stamp embossed directly on the photo. They are particularly noted for the distinctive style and quality of their images. The image on this card is very bold, with flawless contrast and extraordinary detail. The photographer's backdrop is also a fascinating element, with painted trees and plants. The photograph is bright, crisp, clean, and essentially perfect. The reverse of the mount is also virtually flawless. This card resided in the famous Copeland Collection and is pictured in the 1991 Sotheby's Copeland catalog (used as the illustration to represent a larger collection of ten cabinet cards). This card was the only Hall of Famer in the collection. This is an extraordinary example of this great rarity, with a very significant hobby provenance. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++.
