Incredible hoard of 568 assorted T206 White Borders (251 different). There is, of course, much duplication. This massive hoard is highlighted by an extremely impressive sixty-one Hall of Famers (thirty-one different), among them Ty Cobb, Nap Lajoie, Addie Joss, and Cy Young, as well as numerous other highlights including twenty-nine scarce Southern League series cards (18 different of the 48). This huge T206 group is part of an original "childhood" collection, assembled in 1910, and saved by the family of the original owner. The partial set of 376 different cards offered as a separate lot in this auction were pulled from this group; this collection of 568 cards represent the duplicates. 30% are Vg (with a few slightly better), 40% range from Gd to Gd-Vg, 30% are in lesser grades. While not in high grade, the collection is very attractive and presentable, in grades relatively affordable (compared to higher-grade examples) and thus very popular with collectors, with numerous highlights, and with the vast majority in a relatively narrow band of conditions. The sixty-one Hall of Famers are graded individually as follows:
two Beckley (both Vg), two Bresnahan/port. (both Pr), Bresnahan/bat (Fr), Brown/Chicago (Pr), four Chesbro (Vg, Gd, Fr, Pr), Clarke/port. (Vg), Cobb/green (Pr), Collins/Phil. (Vg), G. Davis (Fr), two Evers/port. (Vg and Fr), Evers/Chicago (Pr), four Griffith/port. (three Vg and one Pr), two Huggins/port. (both Gd), Joss/port. (Fr), four Keeler/bat (Vg-Ex, two Vg, Fr), five Kelley (Vg-Ex, three Vg, Gd), Lajoie/throw (Vg), two Marquard/hands (Vg and Gd), four Marquard/port. (two Vg-Ex, Vg, Gd), four McGinnity (three Gd and one Pr), McGraw/finger (Vg), two McGraw/no cap (Gd-Vg and Fr), four Speaker (Vg, two Gd, Pr-Fr), Tinker/hands on knees (Fr), Tinker/port. (Pr), two Waddell/throw (both Vg), Wallace (Pr), Walsh (Pr-Fr), two Willis/port. (Vg-Ex and Gd), Willis/throwing (Pr), and Young/port. (miscut along the bottom and an extremely large border on top, Fr-Gd). The backs are almost all Piedmont, but also included are a few Old Mill. Impressive collection of circulated T206s with an extremely high concentration of Hall of Famers. This is an ideal collection to serve as the foundation for the assembling of an extremely attractive low- to medium-grade set. Tremendous break-up value! Total 568 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+.
