Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Exceedingly rare example of legendary Hall of Famer Honus Wagner from the 1912 W-UNC Strip Card issue. This is the first example we have ever offered (and one of only three examples we have confirmed to date) of one of Honus Wagner's rarest and most elusive cards. This is a particularly interesting set, not just because it is incredibly rare, but also because it is very similar in design to the W555 series. It is also a fascinating card in that the extremely striking image of Wagner is unique to this set. The Standard Catalog states that these cards appear to have been cut off a box and may actually be a candy issue. This is almost certainly the case. Just as W555 are now known to have been issued by Philadelphia confectioner Jay S. Meyer on boxes (intended to be hand-cut by youngsters) as part of a candy product package design (a full box of "Base Ball Snap Shots" proving this was finally discovered in 2007), it is very likely the case that this set was also a package design on boxes of candy or caramel issued by another manufacturer. (If so, as also suggested by The Standard Catalog , this set should really be listed as an "E" card set as opposed to a "W" set.) Only five different subjects from this set are currently known and checklisted. This incredible rarity is blank-backed and measures 1-3/8 x 1-1/2 inches. Wagner is featured with a bat on his right shoulder. The card has a very sharp image which appears to be an artist-enhanced photograph, a process that gives all cards in the set a very distinctive look. Player identification on this set (in this case "Wagner") appears in white lettering along the bottom border. This is a particularly attractive and relatively high-grade sample for this issue, with slightly round corners, a small crease in the upper right, and some very minor soiling on the reverse. It is also interesting to note, and not surprising given the rarity of the set, that the offered card is the very example used as the illustration plate specimen in The Standard Catalog . This is an outstanding example of one of Honus Wagner's rarest and most unusual vintage-card issues. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $1,763
