Two unusual baseball sets from 1960, issued by Fleer and Leaf. These sets were part of an original-owner collection which has been in a closet for the past fifty years. These cards were saved by our consignor in the year of issue and have not seen the light of day since 1960! 1) 1960 Fleer Baseball Greats Complete Set (79).
95% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt (includes a few Nr/Mt-Mt), 5% Ex (with a couple slightly lesser). Keys:
#1 Lajoie (10/90 T/B, otherwise Ex), 3 Ruth (Ex-Mt), 6 Johnson (Nr/Mt), 28 Gehrig (75/25 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt), 42 Cobb (30/70 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), and 72 Williams (Nr/Mt-Mt). 2) 1960 Leaf Complete set (144).
90% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt (includes a few Nr/Mt-Mt), 10% Ex. Missing only card #25 Grant (corrected – dark cap) for completion. Included with the set is the scarce variation card of #25 Grant (error – white cap) for a total of 144 cards. Leaf packaged these unusual glossy black-and-white cards with marbles in an attempt to navigate contract terms with players, which dictated that only Topps could issue cards of modern ballplayers with bubble gum. Keys:
#1 Aparicio (Ex-Mt), #25 Grant (Error – white cap, Nr/Mt), 27 B. Robinson (Ex), 37 Snider (Nr/Mt-Mt), 69 Wilhelm (Ex), 125 Anderson (Nr/Mt), 128 Cepeda (Ex-Mt), 141 Flood (Nr/Mt), and 144 Bunning (Ex-Mt). Very neat collection of two of the era’s most unusual and interesting issues. Total 223 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,880
