Near-complete set of E96 Philadelphia Caramel consists of twenty-two of the thirty cards in the set (missing Arellanes, Baker, Herzog, Karger, Mack, Marquard, Meyers, and Mowrey for completion) plus eighteen duplicates for a total of forty cards. Ten cards range in grade from Gd to Vg; thirty are lesser (mostly Poor). These cards are part of one of the most substantial original-owner caramel card collections we have ever offered. The entire collection of over 350 1910-era candy cards (plus over 200 tobacco cards) have been consigned to this auction (all appear in the Internet-only section of the auction), and have been saved for decades by the family of the original owner. Highlights: Brown (Fr), three Clarke (Fr and two Pr), three Jennings (all Fr), Lajoie (Pr), and two Tinker (Fr and Pr). While many caramel companies were satisfied with producing only a single set, Philadelphia Caramel followed up their twenty-five card 1909 entry with another thirty cards in 1910. The fact that the E96 card set was issued at all suggests that the E95 set had been a marketing success. The Philadelphia Caramel Company obviously made a conscious decision to not duplicate any players in their two card issues. Unfortunately for collectors, they had already used most of the game's biggest names in their first set, but were able to muster up an additional eight Hall of Famers for this set. The cards are very similar in design to their E95 counterparts and can most easily be distinguished by the attractive red-printed checklist of the complete set on the reverse of each card. They were issued on fairly thin stock which did not easily escape damage or hold up well to wear over the years. Total 40 cards (22 different plus 18 duplicates). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
