Exceedingly rare, possibly unique, display box proof sheet for the 1963 Topps Astronauts set. The display box, packs, and even wrappers from this set are extremely rare! This incredible gem, perhaps the ultimate display piece that could possibly exist relating to the set, exists only because it survived in the Topps Vault. It was sold by the company in the earliest days of opening the Topps Vault and is accompanied by a COA from the company affirming its special provenance. This box design was produced to hold twenty-four five-cent packs of Astronauts card. Produced at the dawn of the space age, when every kid in America wanted to be an astronaut, the Topps Astronauts set featured artworks based on NASA photographs of America's space explorers, their training exercises, and equipment. The box top displays a colorful illustration of an astronaut wearing a space suit, while the side of the box makes special note of the "3-D" viewer included in each card pack. (The back of each card features a picture that can be seen in "3-D" when viewed through the special device.) This is by far the rarest and most displayable of all items relating to this popular card issue and it may be the only surviving example, as we have never seen another. The sheet (15 x 20 inches) displays minor creasing in the upper left corner (affecting only the blank white border), as well as light corner wear; otherwise it is in Near Mint condition. The box artwork itself remains in pristine condition. This is an exceptional display piece from one of the most historically significant nonsport sets ever issued. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
