Original artwork to card #25 "entitled "What is a Marine?" from Gum, Inc.'s Uncle Sam series. This is the original artwork to one of the "signature" cards in the Uncle Sam series, one of several which show the different divisions of the armed forces, in this case the Marines. This is the actual artwork used to produce the card, which is perhaps the most striking of the entire series. It is not an accident that this is the artwork to a key card in the set. The gentleman who consigned this artwork long ago purchased the entire surviving original artwork archives of Gum, Inc., directly from the family of Gum, Inc., art director Charles H. Steinbacher. Over the years the collection has long been sold, with the exception of a few key museum-caliber examples representing the very best of the entire collection.
The artwork is an ink line drawing on artist's board (8.75 x 10.25 inches). A thin glassine overlay has been neatly colored by Gum, Inc., artists. This overlay served as a color guide. The glassine overlay is missing the two bottom corners. The artwork is in Excellent condition. Accompanied by an example of the issued card (PSA EX 5). Total 2 items (artwork and card). Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
