Presented is a very rare and desirable complete set (minus one, missing only #19) of R113 "Popeye Comics" issued by the Orbit Gum Co. in 1933. Each of these booklets (2 x 2.5 inches), which features "Popeye the Sailor Man" in a number of different adventures, folds out lengthwise to reveal cartoons on one side, and a black-and-white game on the other. Six grade Nr/Mt, fifteen are Ex to Ex-Mt, and eight are Vg. This is one of the all-time classic 1930s nonsport sets. In addition, this set naturally has a great crossover appeal to both comic and character collectors. This is an extremely high-grade set, especially for these somewhat fragile booklets, which are naturally so susceptible to damage. At first glance the entire set appears Nr/Mt. Most examples graded less than Ex have been downgraded due to very technical concerns, such as a very light crease or tiny tear. Each booklet is crisp, clean, perfectly flat, and obviously unread. It is remarkable that the set has survived in such extraordinary condition. The "Popeye Comics" booklets are among the most desirable of all 1930s nonsport issues. This is a stunning and very rarely seen high-grade set of this condition-sensitive issue, and this is the first complete set (minus 1) of this rare 1930s bubble-gum issue that we have ever offered. Total 29 booklets. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
