Presented is one of the finest complete sets of 1914 Marsuma "Famous Golfers and Their Strokes" cards ever assembled. This is the number-two current finest set on the PSA registry. The PSA set registry GPA of 6.92 is extraordinary for this condition-sensitive set. Because of the gold border design (similar to the T205 Gold Border baseball cards) the set is considered by many serious golf-card collectors as the most difficult set to complete in high grade. This is a gorgeous set, rarely offered in complete-set form in such high grade. In fact, this is the first complete set we have ever seen or handled. The 1914 Marsuma "Famous Golfers and Their Strokes" set is often overlooked by collectors simply because it does not include Bobby Jones or Walter Hagen. However, it does feature multiple cards of many legendary pioneers of the game, such as Harry Vardon, James Braid, J. H. Taylor, H. H. Hilton, and two rookie cards of Hall of Famer Walter Travis. Only eleven different golfers comprise the fifty card set. The set includes one MINT 9, fourteen NM-MT 8s, one NM+ 7.5, nineteen NM 7s, twelve EX-MT 6s, and three EX 5s. This is a very scarce set in extremely high-grade, which has often been overlooked by collectors. The PSA grades are as follows: One MINT 9:
#46 Braid (this is the only PSA 9 ever given to any card from this issue). Fourteen NM-MT 8:
#4 Braid, 6 Braid, 7 Braid, 8 Braid, 9 Braid, 16, 24 Hilton, 32 Braid, 34 Vardon, 36 Vardon, 39 Hilton, 44 Taylor, 48, and 49 Travis RC. One NM+ 7.5:
#38 Travis RC. Nineteen NM 7:
#5 Braid, 10 Braid, 12 Braid, 14, 15, 17 Taylor, 20 Ball, 21, 22, 23 Hilton, 25 Taylor, 26 Taylor, 29 Taylor, 33 Braid, 40 Taylor, 41 Taylor, 45 Taylor, 47 Braid, and 50 Hilton (last card in the set). Twelve EX-MT 6:
#3 Vardon, 11 Braid, 13, 18 Taylor, 19 Ball, 28 Taylor, 30 Taylor, 31 Braid, 35 Vardon, 37, 42 Taylor, and 43 Taylor. Three EX 5:
#1 Vardon, 2 Vardon, and 27 Taylor. Twenty-six of these cards are the highest-ever PSA-graded examples. Seventeen additional cards have only one example graded higher.
This is a remarkable set. Very few complete sets have been assembled in any condition, but the assembly of a set of this caliber is particularly extraordinary. Total 50 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
