Fold-over football scorecard issued for an 1894 intercollegiate game between Ivy League rivals Harvard and Brown. This fascinating and rare relic is the first football scorecard of its type that we have ever seen. This was the only football item in an original owner Boston area collection that, aside from this scorecard, was comprised exclusively of 1890s to early 1900s baseball items. Like a baseball scorecard, this early football scorecard was designed so that a spectator could record not only the score of the game but also chart the action on the field. Each team's possession and progress was recorded by the use of a separate colored pencil. The two colored lines, plotted like a graph on the scorecard, show the movement of the ball on the field in relation to the time. A separate score sheet is provided for each half. Instructions for scoring are provided on both the front cover and interior, including an example picturing the second-half scoresheet from the 1893 Harvard/Yale football game. The preprinted lineups consist of A. Brewer, Donald, Doucette, Shaw, Rice, Stevenson, Cabot, Borden, Gonterman, C. Brewer, and Dunlop for Harvard, and Matterson, Casey, Wheeler, Coombs, Smith, Nott, Murphy, Colby, Fultz, Robinson, and McCarthy for Brown. Running back Charley Brewer, listed here, was one of the greatest players in Harvard football history. In 1895 he was named to the College Football All-America team, but he received his greatest honor posthumously, in 1971, when he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The scorecard (5.25 x 8.5 inches) bears the preprinted year, "1894," and a copyright notice, reading "Copyright, 1892, H. W. Mason," on the interior. The scorecard is in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $100. Estimate $200+. SOLD FOR $118
