Original press photo, culled from The Chicago Sun Times archives, capturing Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe McCarthy posing together during spring training in 1931. Reverse markings include the handwritten date "3-31" and an "Associated Press" credit stamp. The original paper news caption, dated 3/5/31, remains affixed to the reverse (folds forward over the front of the photo) and is titled "A Pair of Heavy Hitters and a Manager." McCarthy, who was in first season as manager of the Yankees in 1931, was probably looked at with envy by every other coach in the league when this photo made the rounds. Despite the presence of Ruth and Gehrig in the lineup, "Marse Joe" was unable to unseat the powerful Philadelphia A's atop the standings that year. However, in 1932 he redeemed himself in the eyes of Yankee fans by winning the first of an eventual five World Championships during the decade. Given the date of this photo, it is most likely one of the earliest images ever taken picturing McCarthy in pinstripes. The crystal-clear photo (10 x 8 inches) has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a small chip in the left border. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $705
