Original composite press photo, culled from The Chicago Sun Times archives, dating to the 1912 World Series between the New York Giants and Boston Red Sox. The photo is divided into two composite images, each picturing action images of the respective players. The first, at the top, pictures Boston pitcher Joe Wood and his battery mate Hick Cady, with the Giants Red Murray at bat. The lower image captures the battery of Christy Mathewson and Chief Meyers, with Boston's Heinie Wagner batting. Reverse markings consist of an "Underwood & Underwood" credit stamp and an "Oct-9 1912" date stamp. The original paper news caption remains affixed to the reverse (caption folds forward on front of the photo). October 9, 1912, was the date of the second game of the 1912 World Series between Boston and New York, which ended in a 6-6 tie. Boston eventually defeated the Giants in an exciting eight-game series that is considered by many to be one of the most memorable fall classics on record. The Series victory also marked the start of Boston's great 1912-1918 dynasty, which witnessed the club winning four World Championships during the span. The photo (8.5 x 6.5 inches) is remarkably free from many of the minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos and is in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
