This massive collection of 1,075 vintage baseball news photos (with few exceptions) originates from The Detroit News archives and includes 220 photos capturing at least one Hall of Fame player, executive, or umpire. The photos span the years 1919 through 1960; however, the overwhelming majority date from the 1931-1940 time period. Among the Hall of Famers featured in this collection, many more than once, are Ruth (one photo), Gehrig (two photos), Cobb (four photos), Wagner (one photo), E. Collins, Hornsby (numerous), Cochrane (numerous), Cronin (numerous), Mack, Landis (numerous), Heilman, Crawford, Terry, Jennings (numerous), McGraw, Dean, Southworth (early 1924 photo as a member of the New York Giants), G. Kelly, Grove, Gomez, Marquard, Durocher, Barrow, Griffith, Dickey, DiMaggio, Hoyt, Walsh, Alexander, Chance, McCarthy, Hartnett, Huggins, MacPhail (Sr.), Combs, McGowan, Greenberg, and Rizzutto. Other notable players represented here, some more than once, include Tommy Bridges, Mark Koenig, Lefty O'Doul, Tommy Henrich, Mickey Owen, Ben Chapman, George Earnshaw, Howard Ehmke, Wilbur Cooper, Johnny Vander Meer, Pepper Martin, Paul Dean, Barney McCosky, Dom DiMaggio, Vince DiMaggio, George Burns, Bobby Lowe, Wally Berger, Babe Dahlgren, Barney Dreyfus, Rudy York, Monty Stratton, Lon Warneke, Birdie Tebbetts, Charlie Keller, Schoolboy Rowe, Nick Altrock, Jimmie Dykes, Al Schacht, George Moriarty, Gabby Street, Monte Pearson, Heinie Wagner, Dixie Walker, and Donnie Bush. Also included in the collection is a game-action scene from the 1923 World Series at the Polo Grounds, two spectacular large-format (13 x 10 inches) aerial shots of Wrigley Field (1935 World Series) and Yankee Stadium (1947 World Series), and a team photo of the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers with Jackie Robinson. The approximate percentage of photos, by decade, is as follows: 1919-1930 (23%); 1931-1940 (65%); 1941-1950 (11%); 1951 and later (1%). Sizes range from 1 x 2 inches to 8 x 10 inches; however, the majority are 6 x 8 inches or larger. Approximately 300 of the photos, including many depicting Hall of Fame players, have been considerably trimmed (for a large number, just the player's body or head remains). All but a handful of the photos bear one or more date stamps on the reverse, as well as handwritten identifications of the player/players pictured. A small number include the original paper news caption. All of the photos display one or more flaws common to working press photos, including, but not limited to, light creases, tears, editorial outlining/notations on the front and reverse, trimming, and pinholes in the corners. Condition spans all grades, averaging Very Good. This is an uncommonly large, impressive, and fascinating archive. Total: 1,075 photos. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $9,400
