Vintage original press photo, culled from The Detroit News archives, capturing Hall of Fame second baseman Rogers Hornsby as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. The legendary "Rajah" is pictured from the waist up in his road uniform as he poses in front of the dugout. An embossed photographer's credit stamp, reading "G. E. Palfrey/Granite Bldg./St. Louis," appears in the lower right corner. Reverse markings include two date stamps ("Sep 27 1922," and "Jul 14 1957"), the typed identification "Hornsby - Cardinals," and various handwritten editorial notations. Although the earliest date stamp on the reverse is from 1922, research indicates that the uniform worn by Hornsby in this photo was only used by the Cardinals in 1920 and 1921 (according to the Baseball Hall of Fame uniform database). Hornsby was in the prime of his career at the time of this photo. In 1920 he captured the first of six consecutive batting titles by hitting .370. The following season he batted .397 and topped himself once again in 1922 by capturing the Triple Crown with an average of .401, 42 home runs, and 152 RBI. Hornsby is one of only three players to bat over .400 on three separate occasions (Cobb and Delahanty are the others) and, along with Ted Williams, one of only two players to win two Triple Crown titles. Considered the greatest right-handed hitter in history, Hornsby retired in 1937 with a lifetime .358 average, second only to Ty Cobb. The photo (7.75 x 9.75 inches) has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including light surface wrinkles, small chips in both the lower right and left corners, a tiny edge tear, and light editorial markings on the front. Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $529
