Vintage original press photo, culled from The Detroit News archives, capturing the 1917 National League Champion New York Giants in a traditional team pose. Twenty-nine team members are pictured dressed in their road uniforms as they pose in front of the grandstand, including manager John McGraw, George Kelly, Jim Thorpe, Fred Schupp, Benny Kauff, George Burns, and Hans Lobert. The team and all of the players are identified on the attached paper news caption, which also reads "Posed photograph of the members of the New York Giants, National League Champions, who will engage the White Sox in battle for the world's championship in the series of games starting next Saturday, October 6th." Reverse markings include an "International Film Service" credit stamp (type of stamp used by the company between the years 1915 and 1920) and the handwritten editorial notations "New York - Nat Leag. - 1917." A date stamp reading "Filed Before June 1919" appears on the reverse of the attached paper caption. 1917 marked the fourth pennant of the decade for McGraw's New York Giants. Unfortunately, it also marked the fourth consecutive World Series defeat for the club as they proved to be no match for the mighty Chicago White Sox, who defeated them in six games. The photo (10 x 8 inches), which displays remarkable clarity, has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a tiny edge chip. Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $940
