Vintage press photo, culled from The Detroit News archives, capturing Babe Ruth as a member of the Boston Red Sox, circa 1914. Based upon the photographic quality of the image, as well as the reverse stampings and notations, this photo is a later print, dating from the 1930s. Reverse markings include a date stamp reading "Oct 3 1933," and various handwritten editorial notations, one of which reads "Babe Ruth as a Boston Pitcher in 1914." Ruth, who is pictured warming up on the sidelines, was one of the top pitchers in baseball before his hitting prowess necessitated a move to the outfield. Ruth only played with Boston briefly in 1914, appearing in five games and finishing the year with a 2-1 record. He remained with the Red Sox through 1919, where he posted two twenty-win seasons and hit forty-four home runs, including league-leading home-run totals of 11 and 29, respectively, in 1918 and 1919. Individual photos of Ruth as a member of the Red Sox are extremely rare, and this example, albeit a later print, is outstanding. The photo (4.25 x 9.25 inches) has a number of minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including light surface wrinkles and a few tiny edge tears. Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $353
