Vintage original press photo, culled from The Detroit News archives, capturing Hall of Famer Miller Huggins striking a fielding pose as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. Reverse markings consist of a date stamp reading "Filed Before June 1919" and the handwritten editorial notation "Miller Huggins St. Louis Nationals." Huggins played with St. Louis from 1910 through 1916, and also served as manager of the club between the years 1913 and 1917. The uniform style shown here was used by the Cardinals for each of those seasons and therefore does not allow for a more precise dating of the photo. The diminutive Huggins, nicknamed "the mighty mite," was a fine defensive second baseman and outstanding leadoff hitter during his playing days, but his main claim to fame today is as manager of the New York Yankees during the 1920s. Huggins joined the Yankees in 1918 and over the next twelve seasons led the club to six pennants and three World Championships. Huggins died prematurely in 1929 and today a plaque honoring him hangs alongside those of the other Yankee immortals in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. Photos picturing Huggins during his active playing career are scarce and this is an outstanding example. The photo (8.5 x 5.5 inches) has flawless contrast. Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $235
