Original oil-on-board painting of a ballpark Cracker Jack vendor by Jim Burke used as the back-cover illustration for the book Take Me Out to the Ballgame (Little, Brown and Company, New York, 2006). Signed by the artist in the lower right corner.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame , written and illustrated by Jim Burke, is an annotated version of the classic baseball song, Take Me Out to the Ballgame , written in 1908 by Jack Norwith and Albert Von Tilzer. In addition to providing both interesting historical and anecdotal information regarding the song, the book also features page after page of stunning baseball illustrations created by Burke that help bring the lyrics to life. One of the most striking "signature" illustrations in the book is that of the offered painting, which was featured on the back cover of the book and has been saved in the personal collection of the artist. The painting features a ballpark vendor selling boxes of Cracker Jack rendered so realistically that we can almost hear him crying out "Cracker Jack, get your Cracker Jack here! A prize in every box!" Cracker Jack, as the book duly notes, was invented in 1893, but it wasn't until the following decade, when it was immortalized in Take Me Out to the Ballgame , that it became a household name, forever ingrained as a staple in American popular culture. Jim Burke is one of America's most celebrated children's book illustrators. His work is instantly recognizable and has illustrated many popular modern children's classics. His artwork is known for its unique style, historical accuracy, and for bringing to life for children many Americana stories, events and characters. There is no product more closely associated with baseball and nostalgia in America than Cracker Jack, and it is for this reason that we were particularly drawn to this stunning painting. Jim Burke's original paintings are normally sold only in galleries. This Cracker Jack vendor painting from Take Me Out to the Ballgame as well as the T206 Honus Wagner painting from All Star! - Honus Wagner and the Most Famous Baseball Card Ever have been consigned to this auction directly by the artist as a courtesy at the special request of Robert Edward Auctions. A recipient of a Gold Medal from the prestigious Society of Illustrators in New York City, Burke is currently the Illustration Chairperson at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. The painting (15 x 18 inches) is in Mint condition. Together with a copy of Take Me Out to the Ballgame . Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $6,463
