This extremely substantial collection of memorabilia originates directly from former Major League outfielder Juan Beniquez and is highlighted by both his 1977 Gold Glove Award and 1975 Boston Red Sox World Series jersey. Ideally, each item offered here is accompanied by an individual LOA signed by Beniquez. 1) 1977 Gold Glove Award.
The award features a golden right-handed fielder's glove and two golden baseballs mounted atop a wooden base. Affixed to the base is a plaque picturing Beniquez, beneath which is a second plaque reading, "1977 Rawlings Gold Glove Award/Presented To/Juan Beniquez-1st Time Winner/Honoring His Selection to The Sporting News American League All-Star Fielding Team." The Rawlings logo appears on either end of the second plaque. The Gold Glove Award, which was established in 1957, is one of only a few major awards issued annually to Major League players in recognition of individual achievement. Because of its significance, nearly all previously issued Gold Glove Awards remain in the possession of the respective player and/or his family. Therefore, few examples can be found in private collections today. Its significance notwithstanding, it is also one of the most visually impressive of all individual baseball awards. Beniquez was a member of the Texas Rangers in 1977 and this is both the first and only Gold Glove Award he ever won. 17.5 (L) x 6.5 (W) x 17 (H) inches. The wooden base displays a few moderate nicks/indentations/scratches that do not detract in the least from its overall Excellent to Mint appearance. 2) 1975 Boston Red Sox Game-Used World Series Home Jersey.
The white knit jersey is lettered "Red Sox" across the front and features the number "20" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in red on blue tackle twill. A "McAuliffe" label and "38" size tag appear in the collar. Located on the center front tail are a "1975" year tag and a laundry tag. The jersey displays light-to-moderate wear, including a number of light scattered stains. Beniquez appeared in three games during the 1975 fall classic, including the seventh and deciding game at Fenway Park. 3-6) Four Game-Used Major League Jerseys.
jerseys span the years 1978 and 1988, and each features Beniquez's name on the reverse with the exception of the 1988 Toronto Blue Jays road jersey. Comprised of the following: 1978 Texas Rangers home jersey; 1984 California Angels home jersey (Beniquez's finest overall season: .336 batting average); 1988 Toronto Blue Jays home jersey; and 1988 Toronto Blue Jays road jersey. All of the jerseys display moderate wear, including light staining on the front and back of the Angels jersey. As noted earlier, each item comes with its own individual LOA signed by Beniquez. Total: 6 items (Gold Glove Award and 5 Major League jerseys). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
