Before McGwire, before Sosa, and before their battle for the single-season home-run record, there was Mantle, Maris, and Ruth. This extremely rare celluloid button was a very special souvenir sold at Yankee Stadium concession stands during Mantle and Maris' 1961 assault on Ruth's record of sixty home runs. The button features photos of Ruth, Mantle, and Maris above "Shooting For 61 In '61 " and was the prize keepsake for those lucky youngsters who could convince their mothers or fathers that springing for such a large and (at the time) costly souvenir was really, really essential to everyone's enjoyment of the afternoon. Few succeeded. The large 6-inch diameter pinback button also has a cardboard easel attachment on the reverse, allowing it to stand freely. A magnificent souvenir of the season-long home-run duel between the two great Yankee sluggers of 1961. For some reason this large pin often has serious problems and is rarely found this nice. This example, which has been consigned directly by a gentleman who personally got it as a youngster at the ballpark in 1961 (his mother bought it for him) is in superb Near Mint to Mint condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,645
