Rare Milwaukee Braves program issued for a game against the Brooklyn Dodgers on June 24, 1955, in which Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax made his Major League debut. Koufax, who was just nineteen years old at the time, was brought in to start the bottom of the fifth inning in a game the Dodgers were losing 7-1. Koufax's debut was less than auspicious as he gave up a leadoff single to Johnny Logan and then misplayed a bunt attempt by Eddie Mathews; throwing the ball into center field while attempting to force Logan at second. The next batter, Hank Aaron, walked on four pitches to load the bases. It was then that Koufax settled down. He struck out Bobby Thompson and then induced Joe Adcock to hit into a double play to end the inning. Koufax remained on the mound for the sixth inning and retired the side in order before Dodgers manager Walt Alston replaced him with Clem Labine to start the seventh. His stat line from the game read: 2 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, and 2 strike outs. This program has been neatly scored in pencil and dutifully records all the action from the game, including Koufax's first two career strikeouts. This is not only the first program from that historic game that we have ever offered, but the first we have ever seen. It's rarity is easily explained. Aside from home runs by Mathews and Aaron, the game was of little note, especially since the Braves won easily by a score of 8-2. Also, Koufax was a complete unknown at the time (his name is spelled "Cofax" by the person who scored the game), and few could have imagined the phenomenal career he would eventually enjoy. Therefore, there was no real reason for fans to keep this program and, judging by its scarcity, few did. The sixteen-page program (8.5 x 11 inches) is Excellent condition overall and perfect for display. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $470
