Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Do not be fooled by the SGC grade! This is a gorgeous card! This card has been downgraded due to a little back damage from tape to the blank reverse. Very attractive example of Ty Cobb's true rookie card (there are others that can be argued to also reasonably share in this distinction), from the highly regarded W600 Sporting Life cabinet set. While W600 Sporting Life cabinets were issued over a period of many years (1902-1911), Ty Cobb was issued in 1907. This is a stunning example of one of the rarest and most majestic of all Ty Cobb cards. In our experience, Cobb is also one of the rarest of all W600 Hall of Famers. W600 Sporting Life cabinet cards have always been held in the highest esteem by advanced collectors and are universally recognized as among the most substantial, highest-quality baseball-card sets ever issued. The image of Cobb used on the W600s all the more noteworthy as it features the same pose as the popular T206 portrait cards (both red and green backgrounds). Bright, fresh, and clean, with light corner wear, and just a slight hint of very light spots of foxing (mostly in the lower right corner). No creases. On the reverse, as previously mentioned, there is some surface paper loss along the edges, of little consequence to the appearance of the card (but significantly impacting the technical grade) that is obviously the result of the tape removal. (The card was probably framed long ago and affixed to the mat by tape.) It is otherwise in Vg-Ex/Ex condition and it is accompanied by an original W600 glassine envelope. This is a very attractive example of one of Ty Cobb's rarest and most striking cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+.
