Substantial sixteen-page large-format program issued for a 1926 World Series game between the Yankees and Cardinals at Yankee Stadium. The cover features large portrait images of each club's respective manager, Miller Huggins and Rogers Hornsby, while the interior pages include photos of league and team officials, as well as portraits of twenty-five members of both the Yankees and Cardinals. Published by Harry M. Stevens. This program has been neatly scored in black ink for Game 2 of the series and records a 6-2 Cardinals victory. The preprinted lineups include Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Combs, and Meusel for New York, and Hornsby, Bottomley, Hafey, and Alexander for St. Louis. The Cardinals defeated the Yankees in a dramatic seven-game Series in 1926 that featured one of the most memorable moments in postseason history. With the Cardinals clinging to a slim 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 7, Tony Lazzeri came to bat with the bases loaded and two out. Hornsby then summoned Grover Alexander, who had notched a complete-game victory the day before, from the bullpen. After Lazzeri brought the crowd to their feet with a line drive that landed just foul in the left-field stands, Alexander managed to strike him out to end the threat. Alexander then blanked the Yankees over the next two innings to give the Cardinals their first World Championship in franchise history. All of the 1920s World Series programs in this auction, this program included, are new to the hobby and originate from a noncollector whose grandfather actually attended the games. According to the family, his wife later threw out most of the programs her husband had accumulated over the years, except for the few that were on the bottom of the pile, which, luckily, just happened to be the earliest and most valuable examples. The program (9.25 x 11 inches) displays only the slightest hint of the lightest vertical fold (very common, usually as a result of being folded and carried in the back pocket) and a tiny edge tear in the border on the front cover (of no consequence, mentioned strictly for the sake of extreme accuracy; this is an extraordinary program, in extremely high grade). The center page sheet is present but has detached from the staples. Very crisp and flat (as are all of the programs from this special collection). In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $940
