Graded EX 60 by SGC. Spectacular high-grade W600 Sporting Life cabinet card of legendary Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson in street clothes. Mathewson is one of the key Hall of Famers from this extremely substantial cabinet-card set, which is one of the highest-quality baseball-card issues ever produced. W600s were issued over a period of many years (1902-1911) by The Sporting Life. Two poses of Mathewson were issued during this time: in uniform and in street clothes. The "in street clothes" pose was issued in very early 1903 (most likely January or February). By that summer his “in street clothes” pose was replaced, and the “in uniform” pose remained for the rest of the W600 production run. That is why the Mathewson "street clothes" pose is so rare and also why this card has a legitimate claim to being Matty's true rookie card (as much or more so than the E107 Mathewson which was likely issued later in 1903 and features the very same image). This is a magnificent example of one of the rarest, most impressive, and most important of all Mathewson cards. This example is in spectacular high grade. It is rare to find any W600 in such high grade, let alone Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson. This card has just slight even corner wear, and is otherwise in essentially flawless condition. Bright, crisp, perfectly clean, and still accompanied by the original glassine envelope in which the card was issued, which has protected it since 1903 (removed from the envelope so that it could be submitted to SGC for grading by REA). This is an exceptionally attractive high-grade example of one of the best of all Christy Mathewson cards, possibly the finest of the very few examples known to exist, and would be a significant addition to any world-class W600, Hall of Fame, or prewar card collection. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+.
