Substantial sixteen-page large-format program issued for the 1922 World Series between the Giants and Yankees. The cover features large portrait images of each club's respective manager, John McGraw and Miller Huggins, while the interior pages include photos of league and team officials, as well as portraits of twenty-two members of both the Yankees and Giants. Because both teams called the Polo Grounds home in 1922, the programs for all of the games, published by Harry M. Stevens, were identical in design. This program has been neatly scored in pencil for Game 1 of the series and records a 3-2 victory by the Giants. The game and score are also concisely noted in black ink on the front cover "1st Game - N.3 A.2." The preprinted lineups include Ruth, B. Meusel, and Hoyt for the Yankees, and Frisch, Kelly, I. Meusel, and Stengel for the Giants. The Giants swept the Yankees in five games in the 1922 World Series (one game ended in a tie), but the biggest story of the Series was Ruth's performance at the plate, or more aptly, his lack of performance. The Giants limited Ruth to just two hits in the five games, with no home runs and only one RBI. One of Ruth's hits, as well as his lone RBI, occurred in Game 1 and both are duly noted in the score section. All of the 1920s World Series programs in this auction, this program included, are new to the hobby and originate from a noncollector whose grandfather actually attended the games. According to the family, his wife later threw out most of the programs her husband had accumulated over the years, except for the few that were on the bottom of the pile, which, luckily, happened to be the earliest and most valuable examples. The program (9.25 x 11 inches) displays a moderate vertical fold (very common, usually as a result of being folded and carried in the back pocket) and the center page sheet has detached from the staples, otherwise in Very Good to Excellent condition.
