This classic baseball fan, dating from 1913, pictures a scorecard design in the center surrounded by portrait images of all sixteen managers in the Major Leagues. What makes this piece so unusual is the manner in which the portrait images are displayed. Each of the portraits is superimposed over a caricature body that relates in some amusing way to the team's name. For example, Nap Lajoie of the "Naps" is dressed and posed as Napoleon, Fred Clarke of the Pirates is dressed up as a Pirate with a bandanna and a wooden leg, etc. The managers pictured here include Jennings, Griffith, Lajoie, McGraw, Mack, Tinker, Evers, Chance, Clarke, and Huggins. These fans were sold as advertising premiums to small business establishments, with custom advertising printed on the reverse. This particular example promotes the Rumford Bottling Co., of Rumford, Maine. Copyrighted by "F. A. Schneider." Complete with its original wooden handle. The fan displays a number of small flaws commensurate with its age and former use, including edge wear, tiny border tears, and a few light surface wrinkles, but these are minor and have little or no impact on the outstanding display value. These fans have always been highly prized by collectors. A tiny price notation from the old days of collecting ("$60") appears in pencil on the reverse. The scorecard section has not been filled in. Although technically in Very Good condition, the front is bright and clean, and none of the portrait images are affected by the aforementioned minor flaws. As a result, the fan displays as Excellent and is in a condition superior to most other examples. Fan dimension: 9.25 x 8.75 inches. Handle length: each 5.75 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
