Addendum: This lot contains twenty original cartoon artworks, plus five cut panels, for a total of twenty-five pieces. The catalog description mistakenly listed a total of twenty-four pieces in this lot. Also, one of the panel cartoons displays a horizontal tear along the top border. Collection of twenty original cartoon artworks by artist Wallace Goldsmith dating from circa 1905. All of these artworks originate from the personal collection of Fred Tenney, who was both a player and manager with the Boston Braves between the years 1894 and 1907, and again in 1911. They have been consigned to this auction directly by the Tenney family. (The family has also consigned to this auction Tenney's 1908 New York Giants jersey, his glove, a trophy ball, his personal equipment, and a smaller group of Goldsmith cartoon artworks that all depict Tenney.) Wallace Goldsmith (1873-1945) was an extremely prominent sports cartoonist for the Boston Globe during the early 1900s and this collection of cartoons represents an outstanding representative sampling of his work. The finely rendered illustrations, done in ink on paper, feature novel caricatures of the players in a number of humorous vignettes relating to the most recent game. All have been signed by Goldsmith in black ink. Large-format cartoons such as these were very popular during the period and provided fans with a look at the lighter side of the game. Each of the artworks offered here was published at the time. Both the Boston Braves and Boston Red Sox are lampooned in these works, which feature many notable players from the era, including Cy Young, Roger Bresnahan, Dummy Taylor, Christy Mathewson, Hooks Wiltse, Joe Kelley, August Herrman, Vic Willis, Frank Chance, Johnny Evers, Jake Beckley, and Hugh Duffy. Ideal for display, these are very rarely seen museum-caliber original artworks. The artworks, which range in size from 14 x 10 to 21.5 x 14 inches, display wear commensurate with their age and fragile nature, including edge tears, corner chips, and light soiling. Many display editorial notations on the front as well. Most of the condition flaws are relegated to the border areas and could easily be matted out if so desired, leaving the central image areas with an overall Excellent appearance. Also included here are five smaller Goldsmith cartoon artworks (8 x 5 inches on average) that appear to be panels cut from larger strips. A letter of provenance from Tenney's great-granddaughter accompanies. Total: 20 cartoon artworks plus 5 cut cartoon panels. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
