Exceptional example of this rare and very significant early baseball book. Self-published in 1866, the hardcover book's formal title is The Book of American Pastimes Containing a History of the Principal Base Ball, Cricket, Rowing, and Yachting Clubs of the United States.
The author devotes 183 of the 556 pages to the emerging sport of baseball, which he refers to as "The National Game." He also provides histories and match results for many of the most prominent teams in the country at the time, including the Knickerbockers, the Atlantics, the Excelsiors, the Eckfords, the Gothams, and the Mutuals. Long considered the definitive history of baseball's early years, this book remains a cornerstone of any substantial baseball library. The offered example (5.5 x 7.5 inches) is in extraordinarily high grade for this particular volume. The green covers (the book was also published with red covers) display only very light handling wear and some minor cracking to the paper over the front hinge. A few of the pages display light soiling, but the vast majority are clean and bright. Overall in Excellent condition and one of the finest copies we have ever seen of this important reference work. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,293
