Rare 1866 Beadle's Dime Base-Ball Player guide, edited by Henry Chadwick (Beadle and Company, New York). The Beadle's Dime Base-Ball Player is of extraordinary significance since it was the very first baseball guide published for commercial sale to the public. Published annually between the years 1860 and 1881, this guide presented all important information relating to the game of baseball, including rules and regulations, proceedings of the annual baseball conventions, including rule changes, a history of the game, team rosters and representatives, accounts of the previous season for the most prominent teams, statistics, including averages, scores of important games, etc. Examples from the 1860s are particularly rare and desirable. Our consignor purchased this book many years ago from Bauman Rare Books in New York City and it is accompanied by its original Bauman sale description. The guide (4 x 6.25 inches) displays only light wear to the fragile paper wrappers, including a few minor edge tears. There are two separate ink stamps on the interior, one at the top of the title page and the other along the base of the last page. A light water stain along the bottom permeates the final fourteen pages of the book. There is also a small area of discoloration on the back cover. Despite the minor flaws, the book is in outstanding condition given its age and fragile nature and is rarely found in such a fine state. Both a scarce and attractive example of this important guide. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400.
