As a child living in New York in 1953, imagine the thrill it must have been to open the mailbox one day and find this special piece: a real-photo postcard inscribed by Mickey Mantle. This postcard is one of a series produced by J. D. McCarthy, the legendary postcard manufacturer who long ago produced real-photo postcards for many players. The postcard, which pictures Mantle posing on the field at Tigers Stadium in Detroit, has been beautifully inscribed in blue ink (grading “10”), “Best Wishes Mickey Mantle.” The recipient’s name and address are written on the reverse, but have been crossed out both in ink and then again in black marker. The card is postmarked “Baxter Springs, Kansas, Jan _ 1953" (the day is too faint to make out, but it begins with a "1"). Interestingly, this is just the second signed example of this card we have ever seen, both of which bear the exact same salutation and postmark. Although we do not know what Mantle was specifically doing in Baxter Springs, Kansas, that January, apparently he had enough down time to catch up on his fan mail and sign a number of these postcards. Aside from the crossed out name on the reverse, the postcard (3.5 x 5.5 inches) remains in Excellent to Mint condition. This is an ideal Mantle vintage-signed piece, dating from the days when ballplayers actually sent signed postcards to their young fans, and one that is further distinguished by its remarkable state of preservation. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,293
