Addendum: Please note that the catalog title and description for this lot are in error. THE TITLE AND DESCRIPTION LISTED HERE ON OUR WEBSITE IS NOW CORRECT. The three specific errors in the catalog description relate to the listed MacPhail and O'Malley signed pieces. There are NO Larry MacPhail signed items in this lot and the only Walter O'Malley autographed item in the lot is a signed autograph album sheet. The O'Malley signed Time magazine originally listed in the description is not included here.
This large collection is comprised of 176 items, each individually signed by a player (a few items feature more than one signature) who at one point in his career played or coached with the Brooklyn Dodgers (two announcers, Red Barber and Vin Scully, are included in the total). A total of seventy-two Hall of Fame signatures, representing seventeen different players, are present here, including those of Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Zack Wheat, Duke Snider, Walter O'Malley, Pee Wee Reese, and Branch Rickey. While players from a number of different eras are represented, the majority of the signers appeared on the Brooklyn roster sometime between the years 1947 and 1957. That fact is not a coincidence. Our consignor's father, who assembled this collection, grew up in Brooklyn during the 1950s and many of the signatures here are vintage examples that he obtained personally at the time. For that reason, thirty-seven of the signed items are personalized "To Larry." Among the many highlights are six vintage Roy Campanella signatures, two Jackie Robinson signed items, a rare Duke Snider handwritten letter, and a Pee Wee Reese handwritten letter. The majority of signatures appear on either magazine-page photos (85 total, various sizes) or standard photos (38, various sizes), but also represented are cuts (5), cachets (18, all date from the 1980s or later), letters (3), postcards (12), exhibit cards (3), magazines or magazine covers (3), and a number of miscellaneous paper items (15), including 3 x 5 cards, trade cards, and hotel stationery. The number of items for each listed player (if more than one) is noted in parentheses. Hall of Fame Signatures (72 total):
Alston (4), Campanella (6, one on a Time
magazine cover, the other five on magazine-page photos, four personalized "To Larry"), Drysdale (8), Durocher (2), Grimes, Herman (3), Koufax, Lasorda (2), Lopez, Manush (one a small snapshot photo), Marquard, O'Malley, Reese (16, including a brief one-page ALS, irregularly trimmed to approximate dimensions of 6.5 x 4 inches ), Rickey (magazine-page photo), Robinson (2, both on magazine-page photos), Snider (20, including a brief one-page ALS, irregularly trimmed to approximate dimensions of 7 x 3.5 inches and affixed to a slightly larger piece of paper), and Wheat (2). Included among the non Hall of Fame signatures (many represented more than once) are those of Johnny Podres, Red Barber, Babe Herman, Gil Hodges, Dolph Camilli, Ralph Branca, Carl Erskine, Sal Maglie, Andy Pafko, Preacher Roe, Bruce Edwards, Whitlow Wyatt, Don Newcombe, Carl Furillo, Vin Scully, Johnny Podres, Tommy Holmes, Buddy Hassett, Mickey Owen, Kirby Higbe, Bobby Morgan, Pete Reiser, Cal Abrams, Burt Shotton, Chuck Dressen, Joe Black, George Shuba, Freddie Fitzsimmons, Dixie Walker, Roger Craig, French Bordagaray, Bobby Bragan, Gene Hermanski, Clem Labine, Augie Galan, Sandy Amoros, Don Zimmer, Billy Cox, Karl Spooner, Billy Loes, Clyde Sukeforth, Van Lingle Mungo, and Gene Mauch. Signatures range from "6" to "10," averaging "9/10." Most of the magazine-page photos have been neatly trimmed, otherwise the collection is in overall Excellent condition. Total: 176 signed items.
