This collection of three very scarce and desirable Hall of Fame signed photos was culled from a massive autograph collection assembled by a dedicated old-time collector (the balance of his collection, represented by over thirty lots, is also featured in this auction). Because he often took the trouble to obtain his signatures in person, many items in his collection were personalized to him ("Larry"), including two of the pieces here. Each of the offered photos measures 8 x 10 inches and is a second-generation print. 1) Larry Lajoie.
The photo pictures Lajoie as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics. Inscribed vertically in blue ink along the left border, "To Larry Killeen From Larry Lajoie - 5-31-56." Lajoie was obviously having trouble with his pen when he signed this photo, as the ink seems to have run out, or did not fully take to the glossy surface, when he was scripting his first name ("Larry"). As a result, only the impression made by the pen is visible for most of the name. The remainder of the inscription is clearly legible and grades "6/7" overall. Also, it appears that Lajoie had begun to inscribe the photo along the right border, but stopped (again, as the pen was not taking to the surface of the photo properly), as one can clearly see the salutation, "Best Wishes." Lajoie, who was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937, passed away in 1959. The photo has a few minor border creases, as well as a tiny edge tear at the top. Vg-Ex. 2) Satchel Paige.
The photo pictures Paige as a member of the St. Louis Browns. Signed vertically in blue ink (grading "7") atop his image. Paige was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971 and passed away in 1982. With a small corner crease in the lower left, otherwise Excellent. 3) Hank Greenberg.
The photo pictures Greenberg as a member of the Detroit Tigers. Boldly inscribed in black marker (grading "10"), "To Larry - best wishes - Hank Greenberg." Greenberg was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1956 and passed away in 1986. Ex. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 3 signed photos. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,410
