Addendum: Please note that the catalog description for this lot contains an error. The Joe McCarthy signature on the ball is a clubhouse example (which is very commonly found on late 1930s and early 1940s Yankee team balls).
This exceptional New York Yankees team ball, dating from the height of the club's historic 1936-1939 dynasty, features not only a particularly outstanding Lou Gehrig signature example on the sweet spot, but the signatures of seven other Hall of Fame players as well. The official American League (Harridge) ball has been signed in blue and black ink by the following twenty members of the 1937 World Champion New York Yankees: Gehrig (sweet spot, grading "8/9"), DiMaggio (twice), McCarthy (Mgr., clubhouse signature), Lazzeri, Ruffing (sweet spot), Gomez, Combs (coach), Dickey, Pearson, Saltzgaver, Murphy, Rolfe, Hoag, Makosky, Powell, Heffner, Hadley, Jorgens (twice), Crosetti (twice), and Fletcher (coach). The year, "1937," is written in blue on a side panel (just to the left of Gehrig's signature). The signatures range from "5" to "9," averaging "7/8," with the exception of one of the Crosetti signatures ("3"). The ball has coated with a very light layer of protective shellac and is in Near Mint condition. This is a great-looking ball! LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
