Offered is an extraordinary complete set of all six baseball players from the extremely rare and desirable 1889 N43 Allen & Ginter series, including Hall of Famer Buck Ewing. All six cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA or SGC: Buck Ewing (PSA EX 5, Ewing is the key card from the set. Bright and clean, with vibrant colors, perfect registration, and light wear on the corners. The back is also clean with no stains. A very attractive high-grade example of this key pre-1900 rarity.), Jas. H. Fogarty (SGC EX 60), Chas. H. Getzin (SGC VG 40), Geo. F. Miller (SGC VG/EX 50), John Morrell (SGC VG/EX 50), and James Ryan (PSA EX 5). N43s feature the same subjects and designs as the smaller N29 second series Allen & Ginters, but in a larger format and with extra artwork complimenting the larger design. Measuring approximately 3 x 3.25 inches, the large-format N43 Allen & Ginters are widely recognized as one of the most attractive sets ever issued. This is a beautiful (and for this set extremely high-grade) complete set of this extremely popular nineteenth-century issue, with an overall appearance far superior to the technically accurate and already very impressive grades assigned by SGC and PSA. One of the great classic issues of nineteenth-century baseball cards, this is the first complete set of all six baseball players from the large-format N43 Allen & Ginter set we have ever offered. This set was assembled card-by-card over a period of many years, and would be a significant highlight to even the most advanced world-class nineteenth-century baseball card collection. Estimating value is difficult as we have never offered a complete set of N43s, but the last PSA 5 N43 Ewing offered alone appeared at auction in 2006 and sold for $6,355. (Note: only two N43 Ewings have been graded EX 5 by PSA and the Ewing in this set is a much nicer card.) Total 6 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate 5,000++.
