This unofficial ball (much of the manufacturer's stampings are present, but not enough for us to easily make an identification of the ball manufacturer) features the blue or black ink signatures of nineteen baseball stars from the 1930s, including ten prominent Hall of Fame players: Lou Gehrig (grading "6"), Jimmie Foxx ("6"), Hack Wilson ("6"), Rogers Hornsby ("6"), Tony Lazzeri ("1," very faint), Lefty Gomez ("4"), Fred Lindstrom ("5"), Bill Dickey ("4"), Gabby Hartnett ("3"), and Travis Jackson ("3"). Also included here is the signature of William Wrigley, owner of both the Cubs and the founder of the Wrigley Chewing Gum Co. Wrigley's signature is most often encountered on business documents and this is the first instance we can recall seeing his signature on a baseball. The remaining signatures are those of Frank Crosetti, Dan MacFayden, Don Heffner (sweet spot), Guy Bush, Dixie Walker, Red Rolfe, Russ Van Atta, and one other (illegible). Although the signatures technically range in grade from "1" to "6," averaging "4," all, with the exception of Lazzeri, are easily discernible, with Gehrig and Foxx ranking among the strongest signatures on the ball. The circumstances of this ball's signing are unknown, but it appears that the signatures were probably obtained over a period of time, especially given the fact that Wrigley passed away in 1932 and Van Atta did not make his Major League debut until the following year. The ball displays moderate surface wear and is in Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,645
