Graded PR-FR 1 (MK) by PSA. If ever there was a "poster child" for the maxim "Buy the card, not the holder," this is it! This extremely attractive example of one of card collecting's most legendary rarities heralds from the very same original boyhood collection as the previous lot featuring a 1933 Goudey set minus Lajoie, and has been consigned directly from the family of the original owner. The card has some light corner wear and several horizontal creases, and at the top of the reverse (as with many cards from this collection) are some very light pencil markings and erasures. We're not sure what PSA was thinking the day this came in. Maybe the lights were dim (California has had more than its share of electrical problems) or we maybe just caught them on a bad day, but this looks like a Good to Very Good, or possibly Very Good condition card. It is bright and clean, with the several not particularly distracting horizontal creases not breaking the paper, and not affecting Lajoie's portrait. We have seen many Goudeys with far less visual appeal awarded a grade of VG 3 by PSA (and every other grading company). The front and back both have virtually no surface wear, and all text is crisp and clear. The 1933 Goudey #106 Lajoie, of course, was not actually printed until 1934. When the 1933 set was issued, no #106 card was produced. #106 Lajoie was printed in 1934, and was available only by mail to those few dedicated collectors who took the time to write to Goudey to complain that they could not find #106 to complete their 1933 Goudey sets. This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire an extremely attractive and relatively affordable example of this legendary rarity, long recognized as one of baseball card collecting's "top three" (the other two being T206 Wagner and Plank). We conservatively grade this card Good condition. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $8,120.00
