There may be no more widely collected set than the legendary 1909-1911 T206 White Border series. There may also be no set from which we see cards on a regular basis than the T206 set. Each year, we present thousands of T206 cards in a variety of different forms; sometimes it's a single Hall of Famer, sometimes it's a small collection; and sometimes, albeit fewer, it's a complete or near-complete set. Over the years at Robert Edward Auctions, it would likely not be an exaggeration to say that tens of thousands of T206s in every form and condition have graced the pages of our catalog. This auction, however, allows us to present a collection of T206s that is, in our opinion, one of the most attractive and carefully curated that we have ever seen, and perhaps one of the pound-for-pound nicest collections of these classic cards ever assembled.
Our consignor possesses an uncanny eye for detail. A focus on all things, big and small, that turn these tiny pieces of cardboard into little works of art. Registration, centering, corners, color. Above all else, perhaps, color. Combing through thousands and thousands of T206s in the decades spent assembling the masterpiece that was his 522-card near-complete set of T206 White Borders, our consignor hand selected only the cards that satisfied his discerning eye. Grade was not his motivator, but where possible, ultra high-grade cards are peppered throughout the set. What the balance of the cards lack in numerical grade, they more than make up for in eye appeal. In a set like this we are reminded that grading does not reward eye appeal (much to the chagrin of many) as there are VG/EX cards (and even a GOOD card) that in our opinion possess the look of Near Mint cards, but they are appropriately downgraded due to a minor technical flaw. Many of these cards were purchased by our consignor in PSA holders and crossed over to SGC in the interest of continuity and consistency, even at the expense of the grade in many cases. None of the cards have been submitted for crossover back to PSA and none of the cards have been submitted for review with SGC.
In addition to the strong overall eye appeal evident throughout this set, we are privileged to be able to offer in high grade many of the key cards to the T206 White Border set. Rarely does a Magie error card come into our office in anything other than extreme low grade; this set has a beautiful VG/EX+ example. The Demmitt and O'Hara variations, which are so often plagued by condition issues related to their packaging with Polar Bear tobacco, are bright and clean in VG/EX and EX condition, respectively. "How are the Cobbs?" is usually one of the first questions asked about a T206 set. These Cobbs are beautiful, including a superb Portrait Green Background in EX+ condition. The exceptional SGC 60 Eddie Plank card offered in our Fall 2017 auction was once part of this collection. We could continue on forever about the numerous highlights that this set possesses, but instead we'll let the cards do the talking.
It is a great privilege for us to present in 109 lots within this auction one of the finest T206 sets we've ever handled. Each card is professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC. We are confident that bidders will be impressed by the overall quality of these cards just as we have been, and we encourage all bidders in the auction to review the pictures online, where all cards are pictured, to enjoy what our consignor was able to assemble.
