Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. This is the ONLY example of Christy Mathewson from the D303 Mothers' Bread series graded at any level by either PSA or SGC! Issued in 1916 by the New Orleans branch of the General Baking Company, these cards are identical in design to the E106 American Caramels and the D303 General Baking Co. sets, but they feature an advertisement for Mothers' Bread of New Orleans, LA, on the reverse. Mothers' Bread cards are so rare they are totally “off the radar” of most collectors. There is no question that they are considerably rarer than the related General Baking or American Caramel issues. The Standard Catalog checklist for this set is incomplete and continues to be a work in progress. All Mothers' Bread cards are extremely rare, but an example of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson is naturally even more noteworthy and desirable. This important card of Mathewson is one of the key cards to the set, and the design is also considered by many to be one of the most visually appealing cards of Mathewson ever produced. A horizontal throwing pose of the New York Giants pitcher is set against a colorful landscape that includes a majestic multicolored sky. It is interesting to note that Mathewson’s last name is misspelled “Matthewson” on this card. The offered example presents with vibrant colors, a crisp image, outstanding surface gloss, evenly rounded corners, and centering slightly to the bottom (when held horizontally as intended). A number of creases account for the modest assigned grade. The reverse has a boldly printed advertisement. This very attractive example of Christy Mathewson from this rare prewar food issue would be a key addition to any rare Hall of Fame, D303 Mothers' Bread, or Christy Mathewson collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
