Extraordinary near-complete set of 1910 P2 Sweet Caporal pins composed of 180 of the 204 pins in the set. The P2 Sweet Caporal pin set is one of the most interesting, substantial, and most overlooked of all baseball tobacco inserts. This classic 1910-era issue features almost all of the great stars and Hall of Famers of the era, many appearing in the set twice, including Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young. The players in this set are also found in T205 and T206. Assembling a complete set of P2s is more challenging than many collectors realize due to the many scarce pins and numerous variations. There are 153 pins with “small letters” and 51 “large letters” in a complete set. After the most common fifty or sixty pins (which are most frequently seen by far) they start to get scarce. Many of the Hall of Famers in the set are represented by both a "large letter" (photo style) variety and a "small letter" (artwork style) variety. This set is loaded with Hall of Famers and rarities Condition of the pins is largely Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (with a few slightly lesser) due to varying stages of wear visible on the reverses. The original advertising back papers are complete and intact on all but one pin. Seven pins have been graded and encapsulated EX-MT 6 by PSA: Dygert, Livingston, McGraw (large), McIntire (Cubs), H. Smith, Stovall (large), and Suggs. Each of the ungraded pins remains extremely attractive and consistent with the graded examples. The twenty-four missing pins are as follows: Austin (large), Bates, Beebe, Carrigan (large), Cree, Dahlen, Gibson (large), Harmon, Hartsell, Karger, Knight (large), Leever, McLean (large), Needham, Oakes (large), O’Leary, Overall, Pelty, Rowan, Scanlon, Thomas (large), Heinie Wagner, Wallace (no cap), and Walsh. It is hard not to appreciate the extraordinary value represented by P2s compared to tobacco-card issues of the era, though the recent introduction of pin grading has generated a bit more well-deserved collector interest. This is a very attractive set in mid- to high-grade that is rarely available in such consistent condition. Total: 180 pins (of the 204 in the set). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++.
