Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Highest graded by SGC! Extremely rare example of the 1909-1911 T206 White Border "Nodgrass" printing variation of Fred Snodgrass. This is one of the rarest and most well-known of all T206 caption variations. The "Nodgrass" is a very famous T206 error card apparently caused by a printing plate defect affecting only a very limited print run. Illegitimate examples, missing the entire "S," have been offered for sale before, creating the appearance that it is more common than it really is, but authentic "Nodgrass" error cards are characterized by a tiny sliver of the "S" visible in the nameplate. This is a legitimate and very rare error! When it comes to the T206 set, which is the most highly collected of all vintage-card sets, anything unusual (especially if it might in any way shed light on the mysteries of how the T206 set was printed) is of great note. As collectors have become more sophisticated, there has been a growing appreciation for all great rarities associated with the landmark T206 set. This is a magnificent example of this extreme T206 rarity. It is bright, crisp, and clean, with even wear to the four corners, flawless registration, no creases or wrinkles, and excellent centering. The Piedmont advertisement is entirely clean and boldly printed. This is, without question, one of the T206 set's rarest variations, and one that is a worthy and significant addition to any complete T206 collection. Because of its extreme rarity, there is no consensus on the value of this card. We are confident the auction process will provide clarity. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
