This partial set of T206 White Borders is composed of 219 of the 524 cards in the set and represents 42% of a complete set. It is highlighted by forty-one Hall of Famers (out of seventy-six in the set), including Christy Mathewson, two Cy Youngs, both Walter Johnsons, Nap Lajoie, and Tris Speaker, as well as numerous other highlights, including eleven scarce Southern Leaguers and two rare brown Hindu backs. The cards grade 13% Vg-Ex (including some slightly higher), 26% Vg, 17% Gd, and 44% lesser (including a few miscut, a couple with a slight trim, and one altered). This collection is overall very pleasing and would be an ideal foundation for the building of a low- to mid-grade complete set. Vintage cards in general, and T206s in particular, have a special charm in circulated condition, and also represent a tremendous value compared to higher-grade examples. A large group of T206s, or a complete set, in the offered grade is always extremely desirable to collectors, offering the most classic 1910-era baseball-card set without requiring the hundreds of thousands, or millions, of dollars that a higher-grade set would cost. Even in low- to mid-grade, building a T206 set runs into real money, a function of there being so many cards in the set and so many highlights (HOFers, etc.), but is of interest to and within the reach of so many more collectors than a high-grade set. When it comes time to sell, a T206 set in any grade can be sold as a unit, or easily be broken up, thus providing a built-in insurance policy. T206s are never going out of style, and it is always a privilege to offer a complete set, or a very substantial start toward one, in any condition. The backs are almost all Piedmont or Sweet Caporal but do include two El Principe De Gales, eleven Old Mill, three Polar Bear, two Sovereign, and two brown Hindu. We have selected ten cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. The key cards grade as follows: Hall of Famers (41): Beckley (Pr), Bender/trees (Fr), Bresnahan/bat (Vg-Ex), Bresnahan/portrait (miscut bottom edge, otherwise Fr), Brown/Chicago (EX 60), Brown/portrait (Old Mill, Gd), Chance/yellow (Vg), Clarke/bat (Pr-Fr), Clarke/portrait (Fr), E. Collins (Fr), Duffy (Vg), Evers/Chicago (Fr), Griffith/batting (Fr), Griffith/portrait (VG+ 45), Huggins/hands at mouth (Vg), Huggins/portrait (Fr), Jennings/one hand (Vg), Jennings/portrait (Fr-Gd), Johnson/hands at chest (Pr), Johnson/portrait (Fr), Joss/pitching (Fr), Joss/portrait (Gd), Keeler/bat (VG+ 45), Kelley (Gd+), Lajoie/throwing (Pr), Marquard/follow-through (Sovereign 460, Vg), Marquard/portrait (EX 60), Mathewson/dark cap (Pr), McGinnity (Fr), McGraw/finger in air (Gd+), McGraw/glove at hip (Gd+), Speaker (Fr-Gd), Waddell/portrait (VG/EX 50), Waddell/throwing (Pr), Wallace (Gd), Walsh (Pr-Fr), Wheat (Old Mill, Fr), Willis/portrait (Vg), Willis/with bat (Sovereign 350, Fr-Gd), Young/glove shows (Pr), and Young/bare hand shows (Fr). Additional keys: Chase/pink (Pr), Chase/blue (Old Mill, Fr), Chase/dark cap (EX 60), Dahlen/Brooklyn (writing on back, otherwise Vg), Gandil (Black Sox, Pr), Lundgren/Chicago (EX 60), and F. Smith/Chicago and Boston (Polar Bear, GOOD+ 35). Southern Leaguers: Bastian (Gd), Bay (Pr), Hickman (brown Hindu, Pr-Fr), E. Howard (EX/NM 80), McCauley (Fr), Orth (Vg), Otey (brown Hindu, back partially missing, Pr), Persons (Old Mill, Vg), Stark (Old Mill, Vg), Westlake (Fr), and F. White (Old Mill, EX 60). This is a substantial low- to mid-grade partial set of the 1910 era's most classic tobacco-card issue. The equivalent SMR value for just the ten SGC-graded cards (factoring in the four half grades at the lower whole-grade level and not including the 209 ungraded cards) is $3,720. Total: 219 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open).
