Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC (submitted by REA). 1888 N173 Old Judge cabinet card of Duke Farrell with Chicago (pose #155-2). This card is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby find of fifteen N173s, including five Hall of Famers and two Dogs Head cards, discovered by a non-collector in Maine among the possessions of his grandfather, all consigned to this auction. This is a very attractive example with slightly light photo contrast. The background and area identifying the player name and team is very light (as made), making the identifying white-letter text and 1888 copyright difficult to read (due to the contrast of the white letters against the light background). A corner crease in the upper left and several tiny spots of surface wear are visible on the front. The blank reverse is entirely clean, a departure from most nineteenth-century cards, which so often display writing, album residue, or paper loss. This is a solid Vg-Ex sample from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+.
