Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. E103 Williams Caramel of Christy Mathewson, one of the key cards of this very rare and classic 1910-era candy set. This is one of Mathewson's most striking cards, featuring a crisp portrait image of the New York Giants Hall of Famer. The E103 set is easily distinguished from other caramel sets of the era by the deep red background highlighting each player's portrait. As noted on each card along the lower margin, the Williams Candy Company was in Oxford, Pennsylvania; this candy was very likely issued on a somewhat regional basis, which would account for the cards' great rarity. When they are found, they usually have serious condition problems, which is not surprising considering that these cards were issued to children, one card per package of candy. This is an especially strong card for the grade. Crisp and clean, with a flawless image, even wear to the corners, and centered to the extreme bottom (some of the letters in the nameplate are partially cut off). Free of any creases. The blank back shows evidence of album removal. This example has been pedigreed by SGC as originating from the collection of legendary hobby pioneer Frank Nagy. This is a rare and very attractive example of one of Mathewson's most desirable and striking cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
